One year later

I got out of the habit of posting here. I was logging everything in the Beginners Triathlete site and just didn't feel like doing double entry. I wasn't until I got a new computer that I realized I had not done anything with this blog spot.

Not much of a change in the last year...still over worked at work and my workouts have been suffering (fewer and shorter). The nice spring weather is certainly calling me outside to get in some workout time. I can hardly wait!

I'm back

Ok, it has been five months since my last post here. Much has happened to keep me from this blog. Mainly work. However, I am training and getting better.

I have worked up to 5-6 miles a day running. This is done during my lunch break at work. I am biking more. I did a 33 mile ride Saturday - have a new road bike as well.

Not much more to post at the moment as it is bed time due to work early. I will try to post some pics and times, plus whatever else I can think of this weekend.

Sore shoulder

Injured my shoulder a couple of years ago in Karate. Well, actually dislocated it. Was cleaning in the basement a few days ago and had it "pop" while moving some boxes. Now my arm is very sore and can hardly move it back past my side and picking anything up is not much of an option. Looks like a doctor visit and some more physical therapy.

On a positive note. The extended work hours are over at work, so when the shoulder recovers it will be back on the bike and out for some running.

Work out slowdown

I must admit that the recent change to my schedule. (14 hour days, 6 days a week) has taken a major cut out of my workout time. That and some heavy rains.

I only got in one run workout last week. It was amazing to see how much harder that run was than some of the previous workouts. It was only a 3 mile run, but it certainly felt like a much longer one! I felt it the next day as well. I did some stretching which did help on the legs and lower back.

I also missed a race that I had planned to run. Work had shifted me to nights for a couple of days and I couldn't make it to the race.

I'm not much for treadmills, but maybe I could get in a few miles in the bad weather and not miss the runs totally.

On a brighter note, I have finally gotten my wife to start exercising. She will go walk while I do my run and she has even mentioned starting to run some 5k's next year. Now if we can both stay motivated for that long.

Enough for today. I need to get ready for work - again.

Inspiration Time

Found this video on youtube. I know its a couple of years old, but what a story. Just watch is all I have to say.

No Workout Blues

What a week. Working for a public utility (Nuclear) means 24/7 operations and this week I think I was the one working 24/7. Going in at 3 AM and doing 12-16 hours in one day every day this week was really hard on my workouts. I did manage to get in one day of running on Wed. I had my PB time of 9:20 a mile for the 5K, but didn't get any other time to run. I must say that really has been hard - not getting to work out that is.

The munchies seemed to set in as well. I think it was all the weird work hours, the caffeine and the sleep change that did. That's what I'm blaming it on anyway. I should be back to the normal work routine this week so it will be back at the workouts again. Will have to work off a few of those pounds I gained this week.

So how does everyone else manage to get in time for your workout routine when life seems to throw a curve into the schedule?

Weekend workout

Just some notes from my weekend workout. It was VERY foggy out. Did some of the mileage on the bike trails to avoid vehicle traffic

Started with a run of 18m 02s,1.70 miles at 10m 37s/Mi at 8:00 AM

Then a bike ride of 55m 48s,14.42 miles at 15.51 Mi/hr followed by another run of 39m 45s,3.60 miles at 11m 02s/Mi.

My overall Avg HR: 143 Max HR: 162

This was a practice for the Spooky Du. It was for a total of 1:55:15. The actual ride is 20.99, but I didn't see the need to push it that far today. Besides this is the most I have run in a day in several years so I think that was pretty good. I have to tell myself to rest sometimes as I want to go out and do something every chance I get. My knees remind me though!

UPDATE: Since I started in mid July I have lost 20 lbs and a couple of pant sizes. The weight has not come off the fast, but I can tell my clothes are fitting different and I can walk up the stairs at work without getting winded.
Next spring I will need to get a bike that fits right. I am using a borrowed one right now. (The joys of being on a budget.) Also need to get some other gear like bike gloves and shorts. They would be a big benefit I'm sure.
